Health Information Technology Program


The Gibbs College Health Information Technology program can enable students to earn an Associate of Science Degree in this expanding arena of the health services industry.

The Health Information Technology associate degree program is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level positions in the field of health information technology. It integrates a strong general education component with professional studies that include supervision, information technology, biomedical sciences, health data content and uses, and health data classification and reimbursement systems. The objective of the program is to develop the professional and intellectual qualities graduates need to apply information technologies in support of health care information operations.

The Health Information Technology program is intended primarily for students who plan to pursue a professional career in the health information and data management areas of the health care system. Graduates of this program can pursue entry-level career opportunities in a variety of locations. They can find positions in acute care general hospitals, managed care organizations, physician office practices, long term care facilities, home health care agencies, corrections facilities, behavioral healthcare organizations, insurance companies, ambulatory settings, and state and federal health care agencies.

Program Outcomes The objectives of the Gibbs College Health Information Technology program reflect those recommended by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Upon completion of degree requirements, graduates should be able to:
  • Communicate clearly and coherently using written and oral skills to meet various needs in the healthcare environment.
  • Use computer technology to collect, store, and retrieve health care data
  • Understand the different components of the content, use, and structure of health care data and how these components relate to primary and secondary record systems
  • Use, collect, arrange, present, and verify health care data
  • Collect and analyze data and utilize the quality assessment process
  • Study the uses of coded data and health information in reimbursement and payment systems appropriate to all health care settings and managed care
  • Understand legal and ethical issues applicable to health information
